Popular Kitchen Countertop Options

One of the great things about building a custom home, is that you have the freedom to incorporate any material, style, or design that appeals to your own wants, needs, and even quirks. When building a custom home, you’re not bound to a menu of 2 or 3 available options. However, this freedom also creates more questions, requires more research and more decisions. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to add to your stress level. With the right guidance, it can be a fun and enjoyable part of the home building process!

Kitchen Countertops
Choosing countertops is a great example. There are many different materials to choose from, and each have their own list of pros and cons. In this blog post we’ll review some popular options that might help you in your decision making process.

Granite

Granite countertops are one of the most popular choices for a kitchen countertop. Granite countertops can be made from a large solid slab, or a less expensive option is to create a countertop using granite tiles. Granite is very beautiful, and is considered a low maintenance as it is scratch and heat resistant. Overall it is an excellent choice, and despite what many people think, it’s not always among the most expensive options.

Laminate

Laminate countertops remain a very popular choice for many home builders, and not just because they are one of the most affordable options.  The technology used to create today’s laminate materials are better than ever.  They look great, and in some cases it is difficult to tell that the countertop is made from a laminate material.  They are also durable and easy to clean.  Still, avoid direct heat and cutting on laminate countertops.

Quartz/Engineered Stone

Quartz, or engineered stone, countertops are gaining popularity, because they are just as strong and durable as natural stone, and look beautiful.  They are easy to clean, resistant to scratches, and because they are engineered stone, there are many different color options.  Above average pricing, but still on par with other luxury materials such as granite or marble.

Marble

Not many other countertop choices can claim the same level of beauty and elegance as marble.  Every slab is unique, and it is always a thrill to pick out the natural stone that speaks to you most.   Marble does require some maintenance and care, but if you are up for the task, you’ll not only enjoy their beauty years to come, but you’ll and add to the re-sale value to your home.

Soapstone

Soapstone counters are a steatite stone that includes chlorite, magnesite and dolomite.  It is often described as having a slight chalky or milky look due to the high content of talc.  Although not quite as strong as granite, soapstone countertops are less porous, so they are easy to clean and stain resistant.  Avoid cutting directly on soapstone, and oil occasionally.

Wood

Wood countertops are usually made from reclaimed wood, which makes them special in many different ways.  They are eco-friendly, and offer stunning beauty.  Be prepared for a hefty price tag as these materials dont always come cheap, and they will need to be re-sealed every few years.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel can be found in many kitchens in the Boise area, but not very often as a countertop material.  Stainless steel should be a consideration, because if offers some outstanding benefits.  Stainless countertops are completely non porous so the wont stain, they resist mold and bacteria, they are strong and resistant to just about everything.   You might be surprised at how many different beautiful styles and designs are available.  From modern to retro, stainless steel countertops aren’t going out of style anytime soon.
